Nanotechnology Education Activities at Cornell University NNIN Site

The Cornell NanoScale Facility (CNF) is engaged in several education and outreach programs that are noted below with links for further information.

Children’s Science Magazine -Nanooze is a web-based kids science magazine which is supported by the CNF as part of the NNIN.  The mission of Nanooze is to stimulate, excite, educate, and challenge kids age 6 to 10 years old and their teachers.  The goal is to get them engaged in science and engineering through fun, informative and science-based learning activities.  Nanooze can be accessed at the following URL: http://www.nanooze.org/;  Contact Carl Batt at cab10@cornell.edu for more information.

Web based training/courses

Weekly Technical Seminars
The CNF hosts weekly technical sessions on topics pertaining to nanoscale science.  These include talks from CNF users, collaborators and staff.  They focus on work that involves the CNF but also includes health and safety issues and societal implications of nanotechnology.  The seminars are held from 12:30 pm to 1 pm every Monday in the Young Colloquium Room (340)  in Duffield Hall on the Cornell campus.  Each seminar is also broadcast live on the internet at the following URL: http://www5.cnf.cornell.edu/live/polycom.sdp
Contact Michael Skvarla at skvarla@cnf.cornell.edu or 607-254-4674 for more information

CNF NanoCourses
The CNF NanoCourses are a non-credit series of lectures presented in four sections that  cover the basic areas required to successfully use micro and nanofabrication technology.  Emphasis is placed on the practical limitations and characteristics of basic fabrication processes.  This course is not intended to be redundant with regular course work in Applied Physics and Material Science.  The goal is to relate, for the benefit of those new to this field, the working knowledge required for efficient laboratory and equipment use.  This course can be accessed at the following URL: http://www.cnf.cornell.edu/cnf5_courses.html

Technical Workshops and Knowledge Dissemination
CNF Short Course: Technology & Characterization of the Nanoscale
This intensive four day short course, the CNF TCN, offered by the Cornell NanoScale Science & Technology Facility, combines lectures and laboratory demonstrations designed to impart a broad understanding of the science and technology required to undertake research in nanoscience. Attendance is open to the general scientific community, but limited to 60 participants. More information can be found at: http://www.cnf.cornell.edu/cnf5_courses.html;  Contact Ms. Melanie-Claire Mallison at mallison/at\cnf.cornell.edu or 607-254-4858 for further details

CNF Process Technology Website
The CNF website hosts a repository of information on micro and nanofabrication processes.  This includes information on lithography, thin film deposition and etching, nanostructured materials growth and characterization techniques.  The goal is to disseminate processing information developed at CNF to the national scientific community in an openly accessible manner.  This site also includes information on computational modeling resources suited for research in nanoscale science.  These resources include codes for modeling charge transport in nanoscale systems, investigating the properties of photonic band gap structures, performing finite element analysis and molecular dynamics-based simulations.  This site can be accessed at the following URL: http://www.cnf.cornell.edu/cnf_processes.html
