Hands On Nanofabrication Workshop for Educators
May 13-15, 2008
The Center for Nanotechnology Education and Utilization at Pennsylvania State University will be holding the next offering of the Hands-On Nanofabrication Workshop for Educators on May 13-15, 2008. This three day workshop is an exploration of the world of nanotechnology. Participants will learn about the growing applications of nanotechnology in many industries including the biotechnology, MEMS, optoelectronics, chemical, and nanoelectronics industries. The basics of nanofabrication processes and tools will be covered and emphasized through processing labs held in the class 10 cleanrooms of the Penn State Nanofabrication Facility along with the CNEU Educational Cleanroom. This three-day workshop is broken down into daily morning lectures by nationally recognized Penn State researchers and engineering staff and into afternoon lab sessions in nanofabrication.

For more detailed information or to register for this workshop, please go to www.cneu.psu.edu.

SAME-TEC Conference 2008, Metrology Workshop at MRC
July 28-31, 2008
UT experts will demonstrate the need of Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Profilometer, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Optical Microscope, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and Ellipsometer, to explore the micro to nanoscale material properties. Participants will compare analysis performed on AFM vs. Profilometer and SEM vs. Optical Microscope on patterned wafers. Participants will have the opportunity to see deeper than atomic level with the MRC’s TECNAI TEM. Ellipsometry will reveal the optical property of film as thin as a few nanometers. The participants, under the supervision of a UT expert, will manipulate equipments and make their own SEM images of carbon nanotubes.

This workshop is sponsored in part by the National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network (http://www.nnin.org), an NSF-funded program including 13 of the top university nanotechnology facilities in the country.

FREE workshop on Spectroscopic Ellipsometry
Wednesday, May 14, 2008
The Univ of Minnesota's Characterization Facility is hosting a free workshop on spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE). SE is used for characterization of all types of materials: dielectrics, semiconductors, metals, organics, & more. This workshop features the review of the basics of ellipsometry including polarization of light, ellipsometric data & instrumentation, & a brief review of the optical properties of materials. Critical aspects of data analysis will also be discussed, and some example data sets will be analyzed. As time permits, advanced applications will be also discussed.

Research Experience for Undergraduates at University of California, Santa Barbara
June- August 2008
The Research Experience for Undergraduates program at University of California, Santa Barbara pairs faculty and graduate student mentors with undergraduate students to do real-world research for 10 weeks throughout the summer. At the end of the program, the student interns present their work in a scientific conference (with 13 other universities), a poster session, and a publication in the REU Research Accomplishments.

Apprentice Researcher's Program at University of California, Santa Barbara
June-July 2008
The Apprentice Researcher's Program at University of California, Santa Barbara pairs faculty and graduate student mentors with high school students to do research for 4 weeks in the summer. In addition to lab research with their mentors, on Fridays, the students will work together as a group to do a common lab, such as building microresistors in the student clean room using the photolithography/liftoff process.

Research Experience for Teachers at University of California, Santa Barbara
July-August 2008
The Research Experience for Teachers program at University of California, Santa Barbara is a many faceted opportunity for pre-service and in-service middle school and high school teachers to participate in university level research while translating that experience into curriculum to be used in their own classrooms. Interning teachers will participate in a 2-day introduction to nanotechnology, where they will manipulate and learn to use tools for nanotechnology research; Teachers will each explore one aspect of nanotechnology research under the guidance of a mentor; Teachers will develop curriculum based on their research to be used in their classrooms; Daily meetings will serve to guide them in translating their research experience to activities in the classroom; The final week of the summer experience is dedicated exclusively to curriculum development; They will practice presenting their research experience for the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) annual conference.
