Nanotechnology Educational Activities at University of Michigan

The University of Michigan’s Michigan Nanofabrication Facility (MNF) is involved in several activities in the area of Education and Outreach.

REU Program - During the summer of 2004, Michigan supported three undergraduate students through the NNIN REU program.  These 3 students worked with two faculty on ZnO nanostructures, new materials for nanoimprint lithography, and nanofluidic channels for biological applications.  During summer 2005, 5 REU students will undertake research projects working with faculty associated with MNF.

Collaborative Activities with WIMS - MNF has an active relationship with the NSF funded Engineering Research Center Wireless Integrated Microsystems (WIMS; http://www.wimserc.org) located at the University of Michigan.  MNF is leveraging its background and work in the WIMS ERC and several shared educational programs will be forthcoming.

Recent Outreach - MNF has conducted several outreach activities to pre-college students

  • Tech Day, November 2004. Tours of the Michigan Nanofabrication Facility given to about 150 high-school students (grades 11-12)
  • Microfabrication technology experiences, March 2005. 45 middle school students participated in cleanroom activities on microfabrication technology: photolithography, etching, thin-film deposition. Each student left with one patterned, personalized wafer.
  • Microelectronics and Nanotechnology experiences, April-May 2005. 60 high school students participated in several activities:
    • Microfabrication technology in the cleanroom: photolithography, etching, thin-film deposition. Each student left with one patterned, personalized wafer.
    • Introduction to nanotechnology in classrooms.
