National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network Research Experience for Teachers
The National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network (NNIN)
offers teachers and community college faculty the opportunity to experience the excitement of
nanotechnology research and to share this experience in their
classrooms and with their peers. This is a non-residential program and
applications are available by following the web links to each NNIN
site.

The NNIN RET program is 8 weeks:
- 7 weeks in summer at the NNIN site
- 1 week follow up during the school year and presentation at the NNIN Nanoscale Science and Engineering Professional Development Workshop
- Development of a teaching module
|
Objectives of the NNIN RET Program:
- actively engage in nanoscale science and engineering (NSE) research underrepresented science teachers/community college faculty or those that serve underrepresented students
- build a library of NSE classroom activities and broadly disseminate these activities
- develop a long-term mentorship support community of professors, graduate students, NNIN staff, and science teachers and community college faculty who will advocate STEM and NSE
NNIN RET provides:
- Stipend - $5,300 (three payments - $2,000 and $2,000 during summer and $1,300 after workshop)
- Travel support to workshop – up to $1,000
- Classroom materials support - $1000
- Hands-on research experience in nanotechnology
- Safety and equipment training
- Faculty research advisors and graduate student mentors
Eligibility for Application:
Teacher applicants
- Must teach in grades 6-12
- Must teach science or technology
- Must have a minimum of two years teaching experience
Community College Applicants
- Must be currently teaching at a two-year post-secondary institution
- Must have taught at least two years at t tow-year institution

|
Participants are required to:
- Complete the summer research experience
- Attend all summer meetings, workshops, and seminars
- Work with NNIN Support personnel in the classroom
- Complete an instructional module suitable for posting on the NNIN education portal

Each NNIN host site will:
- Provide 3 days of support for continued refinement of the
instructional unit and classroom support/coaching for incorporating the
teaching module in the classroom

- Help record YouTube video of lesson highlight
- Host a follow-up meeting (on a day which will not remove participants from the classroom)
- view each other’s videos and provide constructive feedback
- share their classroom lesson experience and provide feedback
- suggest modifications to the NNIN RET program
