Research Experience for Teachers

The NNIN has an NSF-sponsored Research Experience for Teachers program at five sites:

The NNIN RET program supports approximately 20 teachers per year in a six-week summer research experience. The program recruits in-service and pre-service participants local to each site. Two weeks of follow-up support is included which consists of one week of classroom support  and one week attending the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) annual meeting and participating in the NNIN RET Share-a-Thon at the meeting. Participants also present a workshop on their nanotechnology-focused classroom lessons and meet fellow attendees by “working” at the NNIN exhibit at NSTA.

Lessons developed by participants are or will be posted on the NNIN Education Portal under K-12 teacher resources.

In addition, Stanford University and the University of Washington provide summer support for teachers at their campuses. The Stanford Nanofabrication Facility teachers are part of the Stanford Summer Program for Science Teachers run out of the Stanford Office of Science Outreach in partnership with Industry Initiatives in Science and Math Education. The Center for Nanotechnology’s program at the University of Washington is a two week program which includes a BioNano Workshop.
